Happy independence Day! What man doesn't love independence? I don't know any. Let's have a quick look at an inner independence that most overlook.
That would be the independence from the largely blue pill inner chatter of negative thoughts. Though most are unaware, these thoughts impact our daily lives and our feeling good.
Most people think of independence as being free of dictators or oppressive governments. Still others think of independence as being able to be on our own and financially independent. But there is an inner independence that is rarely discussed. That is the independence of mind, free from the burden of what many call "monkey mind." This monkey mind thing is a very cagey fellow. It is the thoughts that fill our minds just about every moment. They are automatic, usually negative and prolific. The only time most of us get a break from this monkey is when we focus our minds on the present moment.
When was the last time you focused your mind exclusively on the present moment? For many of us it was the last time we had an orgasm. It is nearly impossible for thoughts to intrude on that experience. Ah, the glory of the present moment!
But sadly that is about the only time we are given such a glimpse of the present moment. However, there is a way to increase our chances of being free of negative thoughts. Practice. Each time we focus on the present moment we strengthen the part of our awareness that can focus in the moment. It is actually like weight lifting. The more you practice the better you get at it and if you only practice for a day or a month you will be asking yourself where are my muscles? This takes time, years, not days or weeks but the value is huge since with consistent practice we start to become independent of the monkey mind. A very positive side effect of this practice is we get calmer. Lots calmer. Good deal right?
We will be talking more and more about the idea of monkey mind and its impact on our feeling good in the future. Let me know in the comments if this is of interest to you.
TRY THIS
By increasing our awareness of this monkey mind we are starting to limit its power. Think of the last time you got very irritated, hungry, or frustrated. Try and remember what was going through your mind at the time. Were they helpful messages? Probably not, more likely it was our friend monkey mind. It's easier to see monkey mind at work when we are irritated. The more you can see him working the more he loses power. Remember though that monkey mind will likely disappear or diminish if you shine a light on him and reveal what he is doing! Sneaky MF.
