Feeling Good in a Red Pill World 34: Can Money Make You Happy? Hell Yes!
2019
We've all heard the phrase that money can't buy happiness and in many ways that is correct. But Robert Norton, of Harvard Business School, has been doing the research to give us a definitive answer. His answer may surprise you.
Norton and Elizabeth Dunn did a clever study that gave college students an envelope with between 5-20 dollars. One group was instructed to spend it on themselves and the other to spend it on someone else. The subjects were asked later about their state of happiness. Those who spent the money on themselves had no change in their happiness, but, those who spent the money on someone else showed a marked increase in their reported happiness. It didn't matter if they had spent 5 or 20 dollars. The amount had no impact, the only variable that mattered was whether they had spent it on themselves or on someone else.
Norton was impressed but figured that college students may not be the best group to test this hypothesis. He proceeded to do the same testing around the world with a huge variety of people and circumstances. The results were largely the same. By giving something away our own happiness gets a spike.
TRY THIS
Think of someone you love. Try giving something to them. Something they might like. Something they might not expect. Pay attention to the way it makes you feel. Next week we will look deeper into Norton's findings where he gets more specific about the types of things we can give away that have the most impact.
See you next Tuesday for another look at feeling good in a red pill world. Men are Good, as are you.
